Message from the Principal

There is little doubt in my mind that student safety at school is of paramount concern to all Remuera Primary School community members. However - despite our best efforts, sadly, some parents are choosing to breach road rules, and are placing our students and parents at risk every day.

I have grown tired of reminding parents that Yellow Lines, means NO STOPPING and that parking over driveways is illegal. We are now photographing offender's cars and submitting their details to Auckland Transport who will issue breach notifications.

Modelling appropriate, safe behaviour is one of the best methods of reinforcing expected safety routines. Our road patrol volunteers give much of their time throughout the year to ensure there are safe places to cross the road.  I cannot condone parents jay walking while in full view of the designated crossing area, and in so doing modelling inappropriate, unsafe behaviour.

I urge those members of our community reflected in this article to take the few extra steps and use the designated crossing areas, and to respect the rules of the road.

Of course, I wholeheartedly thank those families who obey the road rules and make full use of our patrolled crossing areas.  I appreciate you prioritising the safety of our children.

Lastly, in an effort to reduce the number of cars on our roads, we would like to initiate some Walking School Buses.  To learn more about this exciting programme, click on this link.

If you are interested in leading a Walking School Bus, please email Mark Hassall directly at markh@rps.school.nz .

Let's continue to make our school a safe place for our kids.

Emergency Procedures at RPS

Dear Parents,

Recently, Remuera Primary School engaged the services of an independent company, Harrison Tew®, who specialise in emergency management planning for schools. The procedures developed by Harrison Tew allow us to respond safely and quickly to a range of circumstances.

As a component of the implementation of the emergency procedures into our school, specialised training is being conducted with senior leadership and our staff. The students have also received training from Harrison Tew directed at their respective age groups.

The training consisted of a low key but detailed approach to potential threats and has been successfully implemented in hundreds of schools throughout New Zealand.

In the coming weeks, we will be conducting a lock down exercise under the guidance and support of Harrison Tew. Notification of the exact date and time of this drill will be communicated to all families.

The exercise will be as real-life as possible, which will mean that parents/families will receive notification by way of text and/or email. The information passed on will emphasise that this is an exercise/practice and will explain that all updated information will then be posted on the school website.

Prior to this occurring, can I please remind all parents and caregivers to ensure your contact details (mobile phone numbers and email addresses) are current as this will be our method of communication with you, should an emergency occur at the school.

In a genuine incident, should you hear of a lock down or evacuation at the school, can I please ask that you do not attend the school or phone, as we will not be able to respond. Your presence at, or contact with, the school may make it more difficult for us to manage the situation and could potentially place your children and, in fact, yourselves at risk.

I thank you for your support.

Year 1 Cooking Programme

We have been lucky to have some parents volunteer to help support the Year 1 cooking programme. We would still like a few more. If you know of anyone who would love to cook (Grandparents) with small groups of children in Year 1, please send an email to: Amanda Taylor amandat@rps.school.nz. Please place in the email when you are available, day and times and any children's names. This is such a great opportunity for our youngest students to develop their skills and relationships.

Writing Journey Books (Literacy)

Your child's special writing journey book will be sent home on Monday 16th September. The aim of this book is to celebrate your child's writing progress during their time at Remuera Primary School. It will be a great opportunity for you to write a positive comment in your child's writing journey book and talk to your child about their writing goals and the progress they are making. The writing journey book will need to be returned no later than Monday 23rd September.

Play Based Learning:

The children in Year 1 are really enjoying using all the kind donations of loose parts and toys that have been donated to the school. They have made a huge difference to the Year 1 curriculum especially in terms of developing children's social skills, self-management and engagement. They have provided a wider opportunity for children to develop their creativity along with the core curriculum subjects of Reading, Writing and Maths.

Please remember if you are throwing out any toys or loose parts, think of us and just place them inside the Room 1 classroom.

The fundraising will be task oriented. Students can be sponsored by friends and family to take part in a range of age appropriate, fun and educational activities, events and workshops that we hope will help to raise awareness on the impact we can all have on our environment.

More details will be coming out through your class liaisons soon.
