Message from the Principal

As the first term draws to a close, it is with sadness that I recognise a long serving staff member that we are farewelling at the end of this term.

Mrs Jacqui McCowatt - Year Three Senior Teacher, will be leaving RPS after many years of service, to embark on a life style change with her husband Ian.

Rarely do you encounter a teacher who is not only a master educator in terms of their pedagogical knowledge and methodological practices within the class setting, but also has a gift in terms of their ability to connect and engage with students.

Jacqui's passion for teaching and ability to provide authentic learning opportunities for her children has endeared her to her students, their parents and our entire staff. She has worked tirelessly to support the needs of our students and is to be commended for her creativity and dedication.  Always having a passion for thinking strategies and metacognition, Jacqui has regularly challenged our staff and her students to think outside the square.

We will miss Jacqui dearly, but wish her all the very best as she takes a well deserved break from teaching.

Parent Teacher Conferences will be held on Wednesday 10th April.  Please be aware that this is a Teacher Only Day, children do not attend school on this day other than to attend their conference.

It's been a great start to the year and we would like to really thank the school for supporting our PTA fundraising initiatives in Term One.

We have a number of fun PTA events and fundraisers, for the kids and the parents planned for next term. Here is a wee taster of what is coming up. Dates will be confirmed and details will be provided at the start of next term.

  • Chicks at the Flicks - a night out at the movies for the mums with refreshments and goodie bags.
  • Family Movie Night - a Kids movie night held at school.
  • Literacy Week and Grandparents Morning Tea - including on-site scholastic book sale.
  • Mufti Days, Sausage Sizzles and Pork Buns

Lost Property and Uniform Labels

Lost Property and Uniform Labels

Each term we end up with a huge amount of lost property. Both Uniform and Mufti items. We would really like to encourage all families to please label your children's items before sending them to school.

The PTA currently have a 5% off voucher code for all RPS families to use at Name It Labels which have a wide variety of labels for clothing, shoes and lunchboxes available.

Simply go to www.nameit.co.nz and enter the code: "Remuera" to receive 5% off your order.

Using this voucher code also helps to raise funds for the school.

Important: Please be aware that the lost property area is now being checked and cleared weekly. Any unlabelled uniform items will be transferred into the next uniform sale. All "Lost Property" Mufti items will be donated to goodwill charities at the end of each term.

More Sausage Sizzlers Needed!

More Sausage Sizzlers Needed!

More hands make light work! We need a few more people to join the sausage sizzle roster. Can you spare a couple of hours on a Thursday or Friday, once a term?

What's involved?

  • Thursday volunteers (8:30-9:30am): Prep tasks (e.g. lining trays with tinfoil, filling up sauce bottles) (1-2 people needed).
  • Friday volunteers (8:30-10:00am): Preparing crates with bread, juice, etc (2-3 people needed).
  • Friday volunteers (9:45-10:45am): Cooking sausages and preparing the class orders (7 people needed)
  • Friday volunteers (11:00am-12:00pm): Clean-up (2 people needed).

Signing up doesn't mean you have to do every sausage sizzle. But if you can help the team out with one or more of these shifts, a few times a year, please email ingrid.raven@gmail.com.

RPS Skiing 2019

Are you interested in skiing for RPS?  We still have a couple of spots available in our 2nd team - if you're interested or have any questions please contact us (details below).

RPS Skiing is for Years 5 and 6 and you do not need to be a super-racer, but, you do need to be able to ski from the top of the Snowplanet slope. So, unfortunately, it's not for complete beginners, but if you have some skiing experience and want to give racing a go, you are very welcome! We learn new skills and have lots of fun. There will also be a limit to the numbers who can be accommodated, so priority will be given to Year 6 / early registrations.

There will be ski training at Snowplanet in Terms 2 and 3. We will also compete in the annual North Island Primary School Ski Champs (NIPS) being held at Whakapapa from Monday 2 September to Thursday 5 September 2019.

RPS Training

Sessions will be 9.15am-10.45am on the following Sundays:

Term 2:
•    9 June
•    16 June
•    23 June
•    30 June

Term 3:
•    28 July
•    04 August
•    11 August (time trial gates - TBC)
•    18 August.

We can run a carpool.

The cost of each session is $56 per child per session (if not a member of Snowplanet), this includes snow pass and coach. If needed, skis, boots and clothing can be rented. A non-refundable deposit of $5 is charged by Snowplanet for an access card.

NOTE: The wearing of helmets is compulsory.

Ski Trial

A ski trial will be held at Snowplanet on Sunday 11 August (TBC), to rank the team(s) for the champs. The cost for the trial is included in the 11 August session cost.

North Island Primary School Ski Champs (NIPS)

The champs are run over four days with ski racing scheduled for two days. The event runs from Monday 2 September to Thursday 5 September 2019. Sunday 1 September is the practice day so we try to get down on the Sunday morning. If all goes well, the team racing is Monday and Tuesday with optional racing on Wednesday. However, the mountain weather can mean racing runs over into Wednesday and even Thursday, so it generally requires parents and children to be available until the end of Thursday.

We are limited in how many we can take, but we're hoping to take up to 8 skiers and enter two teams of between 3 and 5. The ski trial enables us to place the skiers into teams.

We will need parent helpers for the NIPS event.  There should be one parent for each child. We hope to be staying at Boomerang Ski Club on the mountain for 3-4 nights from Sunday 1 September, returning to Auckland on Thursday 5 September (or earlier if the racing finishes earlier). The club is self-catering, so parents and children do the cooking and cleaning - dinner and breakfast is provided.

This event is paid for by the families participating. Costs will be finalised closer to the time but last year the accommodation and food was about $105 per night per parent/child, and the entry fee/lift passes was about $290. So you're looking at about $710 for competition entry fee, ski passes, accommodation & meals (breakfast, dinner) for child and parent.

To register an interest, please email Ito Stewart (ito.stewart@gmail.com) with the following information:

Child's Name:
School Year (Year 5 and 6 only):
Class Room Number:
Date of Birth:

Attending Snowplanet Ski Race training sessions: Yes/No

Parent's Name:
Mobile Phone:
Email Address:

Mt Ruapehu season pass: Yes/No

The NIPS event is a lot of fun and a great experience for the racers, particularly as we intend to stay together on the mountain.  Any queries, please contact Ito Stewart by email ito.stewart@gmail.com or call on 021 443 292.

Flippa Ball

Flippa Ball is a miniature version of Water Polo aimed exclusively at year 3, 4, 5 and 6 children. It is a stepping-stone to Water Polo and is run by the New Zealand Water Polo Association.

Games: The RPS Flippa Ball runs in terms two and three and is held on Sunday afternoons at either St Cuthberts or Diocesan School for Girls in Epsom.

Training:. Our training times for 2019 will depend on the pool availability at either St Cuthberts, but in all likelihood it will be Saturdays 2-3

The game comprises of two teams with six field players and one goalie (seven in total). Flippa Ball is played in a shallow pool, where children can touch the bottom. The ball can only be caught or passed with 1 hand. The game consists of two 8 minute halves, and is a fast paced fun game. The maximum number of players on a team will be 8, to ensure that we have 1 sub for each game.

If you would like to know more about the sport, please have a look at the link below or come and chat

Please let us know by email if your child wishes to play Contact Nadeen Parton to parton@xtra.co.nz
