February 22 Newsletter 2018

Message from the Principal

Communication: I need your help!

Effective Communication between the classroom and home is very important to us.  As you are aware our teachers produce an email each week to inform you of what's been happening in the class, coming events and insights into the curriculum.

Whilst these weekly emails will continue, as they are very class specific I am keen to further enhance the communication between home and school by introducing a parent liaison for each class.   In brief, the role of the liaison would be to support the school in communicating with families.

If you are interested in supporting your child's teacher and the school by becoming a parent liaison please express your interest to me via email to stevek@rps.school.nz

Welcome to our New Staff

I am delighted to introduce three teachers who have joined our dynamic staff in 2018.  Please join me in welcoming them to the RPS family.

Dani Vulinovich: Year 6

Dani joins us from university where she has recently completed her Bachelor of Teaching degree. While being new to the profession, we are delighted with the résumé that Dani brings and know that she will be an asset to our Year 6 team of teachers. Dani has a background in Fine Arts and is an accomplished Football player.

Ed Beel: Year 5

Ed joins us from Glen Innes School and comes with glowing references.  Ed has a background in Visual Communication and is a Google Certified Educator. As well as being a fine teacher, Ed is an avid sports fan, and an accomplished musician, playing guitar, piano and the drums.

Vanessa Page: Year 4

Vanessa joins us from university where she has recently completed her Bachelor of Teaching degree.  Prior to completing her teaching degree, Vanessa gained a Master of Business Studies, working in marketing both here and overseas.  We are delighted to have Vanessa on the team and  know that her life experiences will enable her to develop rich - inquiry based, learning tasks that are both stimulating and rewarding for her students.

RUGBY 2018

Remuera Primary School rugby teams play as part of the College Rifles Club in Remuera. The Club is one of the leading Junior Clubs in the country. It offers great facilities including all-weather astro turf (meaning no cancellations) and a family-friendly bar, playground and café for after match fun.

The Under 6 Grade plays Rippa Rugby on Friday 5.30pm under lights with training normally on Tuesdays at 5pm (or as arranged by the coach). Rippa Rugby is a non-tackle form of rugby, which is a fun and social introduction to the game.

Under 7 Grade plays Rippa Rugby Friday 6.20pm under lights.  Towards the end of the season some tackle practise and skills are added to the games. Trainings are normally held Wednesday at 5pm (or as arranged by the coach).

The Under 8 grades and above play tackle rugby on Saturday mornings at College Rifles and at other fields Auckland-wide.  Weight restrictions apply so please see table below. Trainings are at a time arranged by coaches.

New this season is Quick Rip. This is a non-tackle format for U8/U9 and U10. This is similar to the Rippa Rugby of the earlier grades, but includes lineouts, kicking etc, just not the tackling.  Games will be played Friday nights rotating across three different venues - expected to be College Rifles, Marist and University.  Registrations for Quick Rip begin next week.  Please let Tara or Jo know directly if you are interested in this format.

The rugby season runs from mid April until late August.  Dates to be confirmed.

Costs: (Multiple Children must be from same family)

Under 5's: $125

Under 6 -13's: $175 1 x Child / $290 2 x Children / $370 3 x Children.

Uniform: Players need to purchase the College Rifles shorts & socks which are available from the shop onsite at the club. The club provides rugby jerseys for the teams.

There are a few changes this year so please read on!

2018 Junior Rugby Registrations at College Rifles are open from 11th Feb and MUST BE COMPLETED ONLINE.

Note: You will need to load up a passport style photo of your child.

RPS will not be arranging teams as per previous years, instead College Rifles will arrange teams directly. College Rifles will keep children from the same primary school together.

Any questions can be answered through College Rifles website:

www.collegerifles.co.nz or their facebook page https://www.facebook.com/pg/riflesjuniorrugby/posts/?ref=page_internal

Please contact Jo or Tara if you need further assistance.

Note weight ranges for age grade teams as below.

College Rifles only operate the restricted weight grades for each year group.

Auckland Rugby Union weight table

College Rifles have a Junior Rugby Muster Day scheduled for Monday 5th March from 3:30pm - 5:30pm where your children can collect their 2018 Registration Pack. They will have an obstacle course, bouncy castle, water slide, horizontal bungy, Mr Whippy, sausage sizzle and other fun activities (bring a towel for the water slide)!

U11-U13 Pre-season training

Every Monday & Thursdays from 19th February up until the 29th March there is Pre Season training for U11-13 players from 5:30pm-6:30pm.
It will be focused on fitness, teamwork and communication and is only for College Rifles registered players in the U11-13 age grades.

Registrations are now open for the 2018 season at Ellerslie AFC.  This is a great opportunity for kids to play a sport with their friends.  With the school's permission teams can train at school either in the morning before school or straight after school. Check out our registration information for more details or contact registrations@ellersliefootball.org.nz.

Flippa Ball is a miniature version of Water Polo aimed exclusively at year 3, 4, 5 and 6 children. It is a stepping-stone to Water Polo and is run by the New Zealand Water Polo Association.

Games: The RPS Flippa Ball runs in terms two and three and is held on Sunday afternoons at either St Cuthberts or Diocesan School for Girls in Epsom.

Training:. Our training times for 2018 will depend on the pool availability at either St Cuthbers, but in all likelihood it will be Saturdays 3-4.

The game comprises of two teams with six field players and one goalie (seven in total). Flippa Ball is played in a shallow pool, where children can touch the bottom. The ball can only be caught or passed with 1 hand. The game consists of two 8 minute halves, and is a fast paced fun game. The maximum number of players on a team will be 8, to ensure that we have 1 sub for each game.

All gear is provided and the league will begin in term 2.

Flippa Ball is a Fun team sport and therefore we expect commitment from children to attend all practices and games. Please do not enroll your child if they have other weekend commitments that will prevent them from participating in Sunday games.

If you would like to know more about the sport, please have a look at the link below.

Please let us know by email if your child wishes to play in 2018, the cutoff date will be the 9th March. Contact Nadeen Parton to parton@xtra.co.nz or Donna McDonald to donnamac014@gmail.com
