July 5 Newsletter 2018

Mid Term Reports will be going home in Week 1 of Term 3.  In Week 2 we will be holding our Parent Teacher Conferences on Wednesday 1st August.  It is important you note that this is a Teacher Only Day, children do not attend school on this day other than to attend their conference.

Conferences will be of 15 minutes duration with the first available conference at 8.00am and the last available conference beginning at 5.00pm. These Conferences will take place in the classrooms and students are encouraged to attend with their parents.

As we only have a limited number of appointments please be aware that Parents can only make one conference per child to allow all parents the opportunity for an appointment. If both parents are unable to attend together please speak to the class teacher to arrange an alternative meeting on another day.  Students who attend an IEP or Gate IEP will have met with your child's Teacher this term and will therefore not have a Parent Conference on this day.

Bookings for interviews are electronic and the website will open for bookings tomorrow Friday 6th July at 9am and will close on Tuesday 31st July  at 3pm.

Once the bookings open on tomorrow, to book an interview log on to www.schoolinterviews.co.nz enter the code dw7ty and GO. Then follow the three simple steps to confirm your appointment.  If you don't have access to the internet you can contact the office either in person, or by phone and they will make the appointment for you.  Please be aware that we cannot guarantee you your preferred slot.

Skids will be providing an all-day programme on this day.  Any queries regarding Skids should be directed to Jury on 027 291 9115.

If you have any queries regarding these conferences please email Kim kimr@rps.school.nz or phone 520 2458.

Our 2018 Sir Peter Blake Young Leader Award Recipient

Our 2018 Sir Peter Blake Young Leader Award Recipient

The Sir Peter Blake Young Leader award celebrates a student who

  • Has Integrity
  • Has Determination and the will to succeed
  • Is a good team builder, leader and member
  • Is hard working and knows how to have fun

Sir Peter Blake is widely recognised as one of New Zealand's greatest leaders. He was a world-famous sailor, adventurer and environmentalist who never gave up on his dreams! He is a great example of leadership, and how, through hard work and self-belief, you can achieve your dreams. He sailed in five Round-The-World Yacht races and kept trying until he finally won it on his fifth try - taking him 17 years! He also won the Americas Cup for New Zealand - TWICE!

Even though Sir Peter Blake isn't alive today, he wanted to reach every young person in every class room to help them believe in themselves.   The Sir Peter Blake Young Leader awards are in their eighth year, and this year over 600 New Zealand students are receiving this very special award.    The RPS student being presented this award for 2018, displays great leadership qualities that Sir Peter himself would have recognised and that student is Scarlett Herrell, Room 28.

Scarlett is a natural leader. She demonstrates the highest levels of integrity and is highly motivated to produce her best and bring the best out of others. Scarlett will always go above and beyond what is required and has a high level respect from her peers.

She is a pleasure to teach; always upbeat and seeing the positive in everyone and everything. Scarlett was recently elected the Chairperson of our School Council and has led many impressed new parents on School Tours. She is also an integral member of the RPS TV Crew. Interestingly, Scarlett began her time at RPS as a rather shy, fragile New Entrant. What a difference 6 years makes! We are all very proud of Scarlett and know that she is destined for great things.

Well done, Miss Herrell!

Notes from the Office

Before and After School: Can we please remind you that children should not be dropped at school before 8.30am unless they have an oragnised sports practice or meeting.  We have seen an increasing number of students dropped to school very early in the morning as well as being picked up very late at the end of the school day.  Our classrooms open at 8.30am and close at 3.00pm. Parents are responsible for their children outside of those hours, even if they are still on the school grounds.  If you need to drop your child off early and need to pick them up after 3pm Skids provide a Before and After School care on our School Hall. Details on their programme is in a separate article in this newsletter.

Whilst the Office opens at 8.00am it is not fully staffed until 8.30am and frequently there is only 1 staff member on duty.  This makes it very difficult if a child has an accident in the Playground while they are unsupervised. The office is a very busy place at that time and it is not workable if the office staff are unable to perform their core duties if they have to monitor a child in Sickbay.

U7 Ellerslie In-House Tournament - Champions

U7 Ellerslie In-House Tournament - Champions

On Sunday I played soccer with my team, Eagles. We played seven awesome games. The first game we played had four soccer players which meant that we had to sit someone out every four minutes. I was first. I think we were all having fun when we were playing. When we played our last game, all our parents were cheering us on and then we won. This meant we won the amazing tournament. We felt proud!
