June 20 Newsletter

Message From The Principal

Shana joined RPS in 2006 and Friday July 5 2019 will sadly draw to a close Shana's 13 year commitment to our school.  In reflecting on the many accomplishments that Shana has her name beside, it is easy to be overawed by the countless contributions she has made.

Shana is a master teacher in the classroom, one who has a genuine gift in bringing out the best in her students. In my opinion, she must be held in our highest regard as someone who cares deeply for the students in her classes, and through her careful use of questioning and meticulous planning, has always strived to instill a deep sense of resilience and self-reliance with all of her students. Students in Shana's classes always spoke so highly of her energy, wicked sense of humour, and how she always made learning fun.

Beyond the classroom, Shana has been a Senior Teacher, a Sports Coordinator, a Yearbook Coordinator, a Netball Coach, the Staff Trustee on the Board - a position she held for 9 years, a STEAM Teacher, RPS Photographer, Coordinator of our TV Station, and more recently Deputy Principal.

Shana's deep commitment to our school is reflected in the multitude of roles she has held during her tenure.  While never one to chase or ask for the limelight, Shana's involvement - through the many roles she has had, has been motivated by her desire to do what is best for the students in our school and to leave our school in a better place.

On a personal note, I count myself as exceedingly lucky to have worked alongside Shana. Her creativity, willingness to challenge us to reach a little higher, and focus on students are traits of hers that I value most.

On Friday, we will bid Shana a final farewell, and know that she will be greatly missed, but let's be thankful in the thought that we have been exceedingly lucky to have been able to share this moment of time with her.

Her legacy of positivity and warm caring personality has contributed greatly to shaping what RPS is today.  Shana, on behalf of the entire school community, I wish you the very best of luck as you head to Tianjin, China and thank you sincerely for all that you have done for our school.

Roll Return Monday 1st July 2019

Roll Return Monday 1st July

Twice a year in March and July all schools in New Zealand are required to furnish to the Ministry of Education a return detailing all students enrolled at their school. This return determines our funding and staffing for the remainder of the school year.

If your child/children are going to be absent from school for any reason on Monday 1st July we require notification in writing by email from a parent/caregiver justifying the student's absence from school on this day.

This is a legal requirement so please email Kim  kimr@rps.school.nz

Thank you in advance

Literacy Week Monday 1st July to Friday 5th July

Literacy Week

Literacy week is fast approaching, and I hope your dress ups are on the way to being sorted. Just a few gentle reminders about this exciting week:

- There will be fun activities set up in the playground during this week for children to take part in

- There will be NZ authors visiting

- Children will not be following the same timetable and will enjoy a literacy focussed week in the classroom

- Scholastic book fair will be open each day in the foyer of the office from 8:30 am - 9:00 am and 3:00 pm - 3:30 pm

- Our annual dress up as a book character day will be on Friday 5th July starting at 9:00 am, parents and grandparents will then visit the classroom to look at all the exciting work and then there will be a morning tea in the hall starting at 10:30 am.

We still need some help, PLEASE:

Help needed please: If you are available to support Literacy Week by helping to run the Scholastic Bookshop in the school foyer before and after school, or helping with set up and clean up of the Grandparents morning tea on the Friday morning, please get in touch with Susanne van Gendt on susanne.v.gendt@gmail.com.

This will also be a great end to a very busy term.

Year 1 Cooking Programme

We have been lucky to have some parents volunteer to help support the Year 1 cooking programme. We would still like a few more. If you know of anyone who would love to cook (Grandparents) with small groups of children in Year 1, please send an email to: Amanda Taylor amandat@rps.school.nz. Please place in the email when you are available, day and times and any children's names. This is such a great opportunity for our youngest students to develop their skills and relationships.

Electives Term 3

Years 2- 6 (Not Year 1 students)

On Monday 17th June, you would have received an email regarding the Term 3 Electives programme. This is such an exciting opportunity for our students and teachers. Please remember to read through all of the 'blurbs' around each elective, get your child to select three and return the Selection Form by Monday 1st July. The later you return this form, the less chance a child has of receiving their first choice. Happy selecting everyone.

2019 Showquest Wearable Art Show

6 weeks ago, 15 students were selected for a Wearable Arts Seminar Day.  We spent an entire Friday in the School Hall designing and working on a costume to be entered in the 2019 Showquest Wearable Art Show at Spark Arena on 5 June. We also spent the next 5 weeks working on the costume during our breaks and Queens Birthday weekend.

We called our costume: Child of World Peace & Diversity

The materials used included: Thread, fabric, paper atlas, cardboard, embellishments, feathers

We took inspiration from the: Earth, Globe, Beauty, Diversity, Peace and the Mosque Attacks in Christchurch

For our theme of diversity, & world peace we repurposed old Atlas's into large paper sequins, to represent the world. These are hand sewn by students onto our work of art. The child wears a mantle of velvet that flows behind her, leaving the mark of Diversity & World Peace.  A crown sits upon her head, where stars float above a bubble globe. As she made her way onto the stage, her mantle of feathered velvet protecting the world from evil, unmasked to reveal, twinkling fairy lights, swaying sequins and a vision of diversity and world peace.
