Message from the Principal

Last week our community gathered for the annual PTA Family Fun Night.  This year's event was sponsored by Steve Hood, and Barfoot & Thompson Remuera.  Their support of this event and our school in general is much appreciated by myself, the Board and the PTA.

While one of the main purposes of this function was to raise much needed funds to support our development plans, perhaps a bigger purpose was to bring the community together.

This year's event provided opportunities to relax, enjoy each other's company and for our students, to have an amazing time.

What started - perhaps 8 years ago - as a small event, has now grown to be a real highlight on the school calendar.  From my perspective, it was thrilling to see so many families in attendance.

These sorts of events do not just happen and require careful, meticulous planning and a great deal of patience and faith, that everything will actually come together on the night. I would like to extend a sincere thank you to Jo Fleming and Rochelle Hoon for their phenomenal organization.  I know that they had countless other volunteers, but together these two incredible mums have carried the burden of bringing the creative ideas to reality.  I am sure you will agree, that their efforts are much appreciated.

Lastly, I would like to extend a sincere thankyou to members of our community who supported our Family Fun Night this year.

Family Fun Night Hellers

This year's Family Fun Night was a hit!  The turnout was amazing with the kids and parents enjoying all the entertainment, food and refreshments on offer.

The PTA would like to give a huge shout out and thank you to all of the following people:

  • Steve Hood and Barfoot & Thompson for sponsoring the waterslide and climbing wall, providing signage & gazebos and continuing to support RPS events
  • Hellers for the sausies, and our fantastic Sizzle Sisters team for cooking them!
  • SKIDS team for their awesome face painting and prize draws
  • Sheryl the wonderful Mum for donating all the Jojo Bows
  • New World Remuera for the iceblocks, and Nicci and iceblock team for getting them to you
  • Cam at Parnell Cricket for putting on the cricket match
  • Kris, Nelson, Rachel and the dumpling team - YUM!
  • Nikki and Shana for putting together the fabulous cultural performance, and our lovely children for performing
  • And all the wonderful parents and teachers that helped out and supported the event, including getting dunked!

The biggest thankyou goes to Jo, Rochelle and their team for arranging the night for us. You guys did an amazing job! In addition to putting on a great night enjoyed by all, we are pleased to let you know that we raised about $6,400! These funds will go towards new water fountains and sunshades for the school.

Looking forward to next year's family fun night!

Parent Teacher Conferences will be held on Wednesday 11th April.  It is important you note that this is a Teacher Only Day, children do not attend school on this day other than to attend their conference.

Conferences will be of 20 minutes duration with the first available conference at 8.00am and the last available conference beginning at 6.00pm. These Conferences will take place in the classrooms and students are encouraged to attend with their parents.

As we only have a limited number of appointments please be aware that Parents can only make one conference per child to allow all parents the opportunity for an appointment. If both parents are unable to attend together please speak to the class teacher to arrange an alternative meeting.  Students who attend an IEP or Gate IEP will have met with your child's Teacher this term and will therefore not have a Parent Conference on this day.

Bookings for interviews are electronic and the website will open for bookings on Wednesday 28th March at 8am and will close on Tuesday 10th April at 3pm.

Once the bookings open on Wednesday 28th March, to book an interview log on to www.schoolinterviews.co.nz enter the code b8b6c and GO. Then follow the three simple steps to confirm your appointment.  If you don't have access to the internet you can contact the office either in person, or by phone and they will make the appointment for you.  Please be aware that we cannot guarantee you your preferred slot.

Skids will be providing an all-day programme on this day.  Any queries regarding Skids should be directed to Jury on 027 291 9115.

Writing Journey Books (Literacy)

Your child's special writing journey book will be sent home on Thursday 5th April. The aim of this book is to celebrate your child's writing progress during their time at Remuera Primary School. It will be a great opportunity for you to write a positive comment in your child's writing journey book and talk to your child about their writing goals and the progress they are making. The writing journey book needs to be returned no later than Tuesday 10th April.

Lunch Time Club

School playgrounds can be a very noisy, busy place for students and some students prefer to sit and play in a quieter environment during this time. In Term 2 we would like to get our Lunch Time Club up and running again, where children have the option of playing inside a classroom. We are on the lookout for 'play type' equipment to support this inside play. We would be really grateful, if you are having a clear out of toys at home, that they are donated to the school to help support the Lunch Time Club. The following items would be appreciated:

-        Construction activities (blocks/Lego/marble runs)

-        Cars

-        Jigsaw puzzles

-        Dolls/Barbies

-        Action figures

-        Colouring books/Puzzle books

If you have any of these items, please drop them into the School Office. If you have any questions please email on: amandat@rps.school.nz

Parent Help

If you have some free time on your hands and would like to share in the enjoyment of listening to children read outside the classroom, then we would really appreciate your support.  You don't need any experience around this and grandparents are also welcomed. This will begin in Term 2, with an informal meeting before you start to help  answer any questions you may have.  If this is something that appeals to you, then please register you interest by sending an email to Amanda Taylor: amandat@rps.school.nz

Zone Swimming

On Tuesday, 20 March, 21 Year 5 and 6 students represented RPS at the annual Zone Swimming Champs at St Kentigern Boys School.  It was a competitive field and RPS students did us proud with both their sportsmanship and swimming skills.  Many of our students made it to finals races.  Special congratulations to Charlie Forsythe who placed 3rd in the Year 5 Boys 25m Breaststroke and Ella Lloyd who placed 3rd in the Year 5 Girls 50m Freestyle.

2018 Yearbook

Each year Shana Mutton- in collaboration with each teacher, compiles the school Yearbook. The Yearbook is a beautiful book, and represents - in the most incredible way, the amazing feats of our students throughout the year.

Early in Term 2, we will place our final order for the Yearbook.  While the book will not be produced and distrbuted until December, we are required to indicate how many books we are likely to want printed.

To this end, if you have not pre-purchased your 2018 Yearbook, you can do so at a cost of $23.  This amount can be paid via Kindo or in the school office. If you are new to our school and would like to view last year's edition, please drop by the office and have a browse.

RPS Skiing 2018

Are you interested in skiing for RPS?

RPS Skiing is for Years 5 and 6 and you do not need to be a super-racer, but you do need to be able to ski from the top of the Snow Planet slope. So, unfortunately, it's not for complete beginners, but if you have some skiing experience and want to give racing a go, you are very welcome. We learn new skills and have lots of fun. There will also be a limit to the numbers who can be accommodated, so priority will be given to Year 6 / early registrations.

There will be ski training at Snow Planet in Terms 2 and 3. We will also compete in the annual North Island Primary School Ski Champs being held at Whakapapa from Monday 27 August to Thursday 30 August 2018.

RPS Training

Training sessions will be 9.15-10.45am on the following Sundays:

Term 2:

•    10 June

•    17 June

•    24 June

•    01 July

Term 3:

•    29 July

•    05 August

•    12 August (time trial gates - TBC)

•    19 August.

We can run a carpool.

The cost of each session is $56 per child per session (if not a member of Snow Planet). This includes snow pass and coach. Helmets are compulsory. If needed, skis, boots and clothing can be rented. A non-refundable deposit of $5 is charged by Snow Planet for an access card.

Ski Trial

A ski trial will be held at Snow Planet on Sunday 13 August (TBC) , to rank the team(s) for the champs. The cost of the trial is also $56 per child (if not a member of Snow Planet).

North Island Primary School Ski Champs

The champs are run over four days with ski racing scheduled for two days. The event runs from Monday 27 August to Thursday 30 August 2018. Sunday 26 August is the practice day so we try to get down on the Sunday morning. If all goes well, the team racing is Monday and Tuesday with optional racing on Wednesday. However, the mountain weather can mean racing runs over into Wednesday and even Thursday, so it generally requires parents and children to be available until the end of Thursday.

We will need parent helpers for the event.  There should be one parent for each child. We hope to be staying at Boomerang Ski Club on the mountain for 3-5 nights from Sunday 26 August, returning to Auckland on Thursday 30 August (or earlier if the racing finishes earlier). The club is self-catering, so parents and children do the cooking and cleaning. DInner and Breakfast is provided.

We are limited in how many we can take, but we're hoping to take 8 skiers and enter two teams of between 3 and 5. The ski trial enables us to place the skiers into teams.

This event is paid for by the families participating. Costs will be finalised closer to the time but last year the accommodation and food was about $100 per night per parent/child, and the entry fee / lift pass was about $290. So you're looking at about $600 for competition entry fee, accommodation & meals (breakfast, dinner) for child and parent, and child's ski pass.
