March 7 Newsletter

Message from the Principal

As you are aware, in 2018 our Board of Trustees installed a Bee enclosure with two hives to support our STEAM Programme.  The bee enclosure has been a popular attraction for our students and families.  It is not uncommon to see students gathered around the veiwing statioins, watching the bees hard at work, during the students' break times.

We have been thrilled with this addition to our STEAM programme, and look forward to providing students with additional opportunities to learn more about bees and the important role they play in our ecosystem.

During the Christmas holidays, the school's contracted apiarists (bee keepers) extracted the honey form the hives, and using a commerical grade kitchen, prepared the honey for public consumption.  In excess of 24kgs of honey was extracted which has now been bottled.   From Monday March 11, the bottled honey will be available for purchase from the school office at a cost of either $15 & $18 depending on the size.

Message from the Board of Trustees

Every three years, state and state integrated school communities elect their parent and staff trustees to help govern their schools. Right now boards around the country are preparing to hold their 2019 triennial School Board of Trustee elections.

At RPS, our Board comprises six parent elected members, with the Staff Trustee and Principal completing the full Board.

This year's election will see long serving Trustees: Jo Christie, Sharon Egen and Tom Reeves not standing for re-election.  Early in Term 2 we will formaly recognise their oustanding contributions to our School.

With such a strong skill set leaving our Board, it was with great pleasure that we welcomed Campbell Izzard and Grant Truman on to the Board in December 2018.  Both Campbell and Grant will be standing for election in May. We are also delighted that Nicole Hardie (Chair of the Board) and Nelson Wang (Treasurer) are also standing for re-election.

If you are interested in finding out more about standing as a Trustee for our Board, please contact our Board Chair - Nicole Hardie at boardchair@rps.school.nz or our Principal - Steve King at stevek@rps.school.nz.

Year 1 needs your help

Resources

The Year 1 teachers are looking at expanding opportunities for developing children's early language through play. To do this we are on the hunt for some resources such as dress ups, trains sets, car sets, construction toys, duplo, toy animals, puppets, toy kitchens, dolls and tool sets. If you have any toys that you would be interested in donating to the Year 1 team please contact Amanda on amandat@rps.school.nz or drop the toys into Room 1 (downstairs in the Year 1 block). Thank you from the Year 1 team.

Message from the PTA

Whittaker's Chocolate Fundraising Team

We will be running our very successful, and extremely delicious, Whittaker's Chocolate Fundraiser again early in Term 2.

The duration of the fundraiser will be two weeks. We are currently putting together a team of people to run this and need about 6 willing volunteers.

The Whittaker's team will be in charge of ordering the chocolate, labelling it for the kids to take home, be in charge of comms out to the school, collect the money/hand out more boxes to sell each day at the Chocolate Station, as well as banking the money.

Please contact Nicola Davies ASAP at ptachair@rps.school.nz if you are able to be part of this team.

Many thanks

Your PTA
