Message from the Principal

For many years, our dedicated PTA have been working tirelessly to raise funds to support our students.  Their feats have been nothing short of remarkable and I know the support shown by you - our parents, is very much appreciated.

The PTA has always strived to ensure that their fundraising should directly benefit our students.  To this end I am delighted to acknowledge and thank them, for their latest gift to our students.

Your will have no doubt seen the two new concrete table tennis tables that were installed in the last holidays. While their installation was rather a challenge, it was wonderful to see the delight on the children's faces when they returned after the holidays and saw the new tables.

With winter quickly approaching I was keen to provide our senior students with some additional play equipment - particularly on the hard areas, as the fields will soon become unusable. The PTA's willingness to support this project enabled it to be fast tracked, and the table tennis tables are now being very well used by the students, and also our community during the weekends.

I am sincerely grateful for the generosity shown by the PTA, and would like to acknowledge Nicola Davies - our PTA Chair, for her support of this project.

In closing, the PTA's latest endeavour will kick off tomorrow - the Whittakers Chocolate Fundraiser. Please support this project, the funds raised through this project will have a direct benefit to our students.


Board of Trustees Election 2019


2019 will see a new Board of Trustees appointed to govern Remuera Primary School.

The Board of Trustees is accountable for student achievement, sets the vision for our school and ensures our school complies with legal and policy requirements. Elections are held every three years and for the coming election a timeline has been agreed which we are working towards.

2019 Timeline:

29th April: nomination forms were mailed out to our school community and advertisied in local papers.

24th May: Nominations close at noon on this day.

On or before 29th May: Voting papers will be mailed to all eligible voters.

7th June: Election Day. Voting closes at 12pm, any papers submitted after this time cannot be opened or counted and these votes will be declared invalid.

13th June: Election results declared

14th June New Board takes Office

Wheels Days aim to promote healthy and sustainable transport forms in line with our status as a Travelwise School.   Children are encouraged to bring bikes, scooters, roller blades, skates, skateboards or remote control cars to school, and are allocated periods during the day to enjoy playing with them. To minimise the chaos, the school has been split across 3 days.

Dates for the various year groups are as follows…

Year 1 & 2 Wednesday 15th May

Year 3 & 4 Tuesday 14th May

Year 5 & 6 Thursday 16th May

Junior School children are not to ride or skate to or from school unless supervised by a parent.

Middle School children are not to ride or skate to or from school unless supervised by a parent or Senior School sibling.

For safekeeping, children can take gear to the pool area when they arrive at school, and pick it up at the end of the school day.

In order to take part, safety gear must be worn, including suitable footwear and helmets.

For safety reasons, items cannot be ridden around the school until Break 1 when specific zones will be allocated.

Literacy Week:

The week starting Monday 1st of July will be our annual Literacy week. The aim of this week will be to make links between reading and writing through drama and oral language. There will be lots of fun events happening in school and on Friday 5th July we will have our Book Character Parade. On this day children come to school dressed up as their favourite book character and there are prizes to be won for the best dressed. There will be more information coming out around this nearer the time.

Play Based Learning:

As you may know the Year 1 Team have a focus this year on developing the Play Based Learning curriculum to help support children's problem solving, critical thinking and creativity. Thank you to all the families that have gifted toys to the team to help support this. Please think of the school when throwing out old toys, you are welcome to drop them into Room 1 in the Year 1 block.

This Term we are focusing on developing resources for 'Loose Part Play.' Loose parts offer children infinite play opportunities and allow children to do the thinking instead of the manufactured toy. Loose parts are any collection of natural manmade objects that can be used to extend and further ideas of children's play. The parts can be anything the children want them to be!

We are looking for the following items, please email Amanda Taylor if you think you may be able to donate some 'loose parts: amandat@rps.school.nz or drop them straight into Room 1.

Nature Based Loose Parts: Sticks, logs, rocks, shells, acorns, wood chips, sand, feathers, cinnamon sticks and seeds.

Wood Loose Parts: Corks, pegs, wooden beads, chair legs, napkin rings, scrabble pieces, spools, wood frames, rings, thread spools.

Plastic Loose Parts: Milk Caps, bottles, PVC Pipes, reels, empty spice containers, hair rollers, CD cases, buttons, funnels, golf balls, hula hoops and plastic bead necklaces.

Metal Loose Parts: Nuts and bolts, washers, tin foil, curtain rings, potato mashers, gutters, magnets, door handles, door knobs, tubing, spoons, hair clips, muffin tins, old keys, and padlocks and keys.

Ceramic & Glass Loose Parts: Ceramic tiles, glass beads, marbles, slate, tiles, small mirror discs, small glass stones and gems.

Fabric, Yarn & Ribbon Loose Parts: Chiffon, twine, ribbon, silk, wool, flags, yarn, thread, felt pieces, doilies, lace, string, rope, rubber bands.

Packaging Loose Parts: Bubble wrap, boxes, paper rolls, wrapping paper, painters tape, egg cartons, and cereal boxes.

One man's trash is another man's treasure.

Whittakers Chocolate fundraising packs are coming home with your children tomorrow.

By now you should have received an email via your class liaison with all the key points about this exciting fundraiser. If you haven't have a look at the info sheet that comes with the pack when your child brings it home.

There are awesome prizes up for grabs including a random prize draw for everyone who sells a pack.

If you would rather not take part in selling chocolate, there is an option to opt-out by completing the form included with the pack. The school makes over $30 profit per pack so if you wished to make a donation of $30 instead of selling the chocolate your child would still be eligible for prize draws.

Hahei Weekend Away

The annual RPS Hahei Holiday was held at the end of Term 1.  A big thank you to all the families who supported. This year we raised $3,500 for the PTA.

Over the past 3 years they have donated almost $10k to our school - thanks Hahei!

Our very popular annual School Disco is back for another year. But this year it's a little different - there will now be three separate discos, split by age group, instead of the usual two. All three discos will be held on Thursday 6th of June. Students can only attend the disco for their age group.

More information will be coming out soon but for now, mark the date in your diary.

PTA Meeting Times - All Welcome

The PTA meetings are held three times a term in the RPS staffroom and are open to everyone - whether you are keen to help out regularly or just curious to see what the PTA does or help with your ideas.

The remaining meetings for Term Two are:

  • Thursday 30th May - evening meeting, 7:00pm
  • Thursday 27th June - afternoon meeting, 2:00pm

The PTA also needs new volunteers to help with events and fundraising initiatives. Whether you can spare a couple of hours or are willing to take on a bigger role, we need you!

There are also a few key roles that are currently vacant, or soon will be:

  • Jesters Pies - vacant now - organise pie orders and delivery to school once a term
  • Sausage Sizzle Team - 2020 vacancy - to supplement the team who organise the sausage sizzles twice a term
  • Stationery - 2020 vacancy - first 2-3 days of the school year, organise the team of volunteers to sort and deliver stationery boxes to classrooms
  • Family Fun Night - 2020 vacancy - organising team for next year's family fun night from late Term 4 to mid Term 1.

Skids Before and After School Care at RPS


The right start to a child's day is essential for great learning. sKids are able to care for children at school before school begins for the day. We're open from 7.30am. Join us on Tuesday and Thursday mornings for a hot breakfast and a take-away Café-style coffee for all parents!


Whether children need care until 4pm, 5pm or 6pm, for a full week or just one or more days, sKids can help with all permanent or adhoc casual care.

Kids have so much fun at sKids they often don't want to leave. We'll provide a nutritious afternoon tea (please visit us to see our new-improved Food Menu), supervise their homework, let them play, then run a fun activity so parents can rest assured that they are safe, secure and having a great time.

Remuera Intermediate Open Morning

Parents considering enrolling their child at Remuera Intermediate for 2020 are invited to bring their child to attend our Open Morning.

When: Wednesday, 12 June 2019

Time: 8:45 am- 10:20 am

Where: Meet in the main foyer (Ascot Avenue end) to begin your tour

Tour guides will be available from 8:45 am. You are invited to come along any time between 8:45 am and 9:45 am to commence your tour.

Administration staff, teachers and senior management will be available to answer any questions you may have.

For our local primary schools, there will also be a guided school tour organised for each school in August for all Year 6 Students .

We ask parents of students who live in our school home zone to apply for 2020 enrolment by Wednesday 4 September 2019. This assists our School to plan appropriately for next year, by including their child in our numbers. Please be aware, the In Zone enrolment numbers are critical in determining the number of out of zone places available.
